This is what is provided by the SuSE 8.1 rpm gvim-6.1-172.i586.rpm:
/usr/X11R6/bin/gvim
Is it there?
Further, if this is the same machine that you were reporting a full
filesystem on, there's no telling what how that could affect anything
else you're trying to do. You should be freeing up some space on the
hard drive above all else.
