Your error is the same error I got with the 4x media in a 2x compatible 
drive when using dvdrecord.  I was recommended to try ProDVD from the 
cdrecord site.  You just download a binary.  I haven't had a chance to 
try this on my RH9.0 system where the problem happened.  I have had good 
success with a 4x drive and 4x media on a SuSE9.0 system using K3b.
