I agree, If the person asked for an Ipod, they want an Ipod. If they asked for a mp3 player... now thats a different story.
Misc. Info: A nice player to check out is the Rio karma: 20GB, Ethernet connection in base station (with webbased Java interface (Linux compatibility)), Nice display, and approx the same size as a Ipod. (same price.)

As an iPod owner, I will say that if an iPod was requested, you may want
to just go ahead and get that.
If they specifically requested an iPod, that probably means they want an
iPod and not a clone. I know I'd be disappointed if I had to get (or was
given) something else, even moreso since I love mine so much. Even if the
person has never touched an iPod, I'd still recommend it simply because I
believe it to be the best portable music player on the market.
Just my opinion.
