If you're looking for a really nice firewall/router distro, you definitely want to check out IPcop ( http://www.ipcop.org ).

Some features it has (from the top of my head):

Web-based GUI interface
Snort Intrusion Detection System
Transparent cacheing Squid proxy server
MRTG traffic logging
Easy to install (takes 10 minutes)

That sounds like a good approach in many settings, but not the best here.

I may well try it, though not for this setup. I do have a bit of F/U/D
regarding Coyote as I had read the project was moribund or abandoned.  

Can anyone comment on that?
