The only maitance these boxes need is firmware updates. (very important) luckly these updates only come out every two months or so.

Ditto. My 4 port DLink 704P has been trouble free over a couple of years of
use across a couple different service providers, PPPoE and otherwise. I use
the DHCP and Firewall features and believe the brand will support all your
requisites, plus it should be easily configured via password web interface
(though found one oddity in that Opera 6.0 won't render the options page
after log in -though it all works under Galleon, Mozilla, Konquerer, Firebird
and Netscape). Also had success using the included print server parallel port
until I updated to a network ready printer.

Feel free to email me privately with specifics. I have been working very
regularly with Macs for few years now and know a fair bit about them. Been
using OSeX with current Apple media production programs for over a year.
HTH!
