This is what you should look at for a computer based DVD writer.  
Basically, you just have a SCSI mmc3 compliant drive for it to work with 
ide-scsi emulation.  dvdrecord will burn the image made with mkisofs.  
That is for a standard iso9660 compliant data DVD not a DVD movie.  To 
do a DVD movie takes a UDF filesystem and the filenames and directory 
layout to match what a movie DVD requires.  Watch out for warnings on 
newer media to be used in some older DVD writers, mainly Panasonic.  
There is a ROM update for the drives affected.  In SUSE 9.0 the K3B app 
is magic for drag and drop data DVD creation.  It is a dream come true 
for a quick burn.  I haven't done a DVD-RW yet, only DVD-R.
