[ale] gateway external ip

If you pay for messaging then buildin protection against your IP cycling 
as BellSouth does maintenance.  I notice periodically that my pppoe 
connection will cycle in a short period of time a  couple of times.  
Very occasionally it will cycle up to 4 or 5 times during maintenance.  
In rare cases I've seen up to 10 or 20 times when real problems are 
occuring, like last Christmas.  I haven't had hardly any trouble in 
three years now thru Earthlink, but when trouble hits it can be bad.
