[ale] Filesystem Choice?

SuSE 8.x comes with XFS as a installation option. I use it on two 60Mb
disks configured as a logical volume and have great read/write
performance. For your large files of 3-10Mb you should take the
defaults for XFS so your block size will be 4096 bytes per block. This
will work very well for your application and be very efficient. If your
files were small then you might want a smaller block size. XFS is
great. ReiserFS is great. At this point I am not interested in a
non-journaled file system except for the /boot partition. I've used
both XFS and Reiser with good success on workstations and laptops. XFS
scales better than Reiser so for large installations of terabytes of
data, XFS is the way to go. For your application, either Reiser or XFS
is just fine. You might want to explore the Reiser options on block
size of the filesystem so you can maximize your efficiency. Make sure
you understand the backup options and recovery options of each
filesystem as that is more important in the long run. Xfsdump works
great on the SGIs but I haven't used it under Linux. It has an
interactive option so you can pick the files/directories to restore and
also puts an index on the tape. It makes many 0.5 Gb files on the tape
so if a tape has a bad spot you don't lose the whole tape. It doesn't
have a true verify option but some tricks with the xfsrestore utility
will let you know if the tape if viable.
