[ale] Line truncation in a terminal....

How strange....I get different outputs each way. Here's an example (using
rh 8.0 and gnome-terminal with terminal expanded to screen width):
$ ps -ef
jbw 1400 1 0 08:11 ? 00:00:00
/usr/libexec/nautilus-throbber
--oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:Nautilus_Throbber_Factory --oaf-ior-fd=18
$ ps -ef | grep nautilus-throbber
jbw 1400 1 0 08:11 ? 00:00:00
/usr/libexec/nautilus-throbber -
$ ps -efw | grep nautilus-throbber
jbw 1400 1 0 08:11 ? 00:00:00
/usr/libexec/nautilus-throbber
--oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:Nautilus_Throbber_Factory -
