Ouch! um, it was still at 0!.
though, the following line in my init script looks like this: (I added that
line above the if just now) (should the 1 have a parenthesis or not?)
############################################################################
###
#
# Kernel Parameter Configuration
#
# Required to enable IPv4 forwarding.
# Redhat users can try setting FORWARD_IPV4 in /etc/sysconfig/network to
true
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
if [ "$SYSCTL" = "" ]
then
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
else
$SYSCTL net.ipv4.ip_forward="1"
fi
Thanks everyone for the help so far!

Wild guess: did you (or your init scripts) do
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
?
