[ale] cdrecord on Sony DRU-500A?

So I rushed out and picked up the new Sony DRU-500A DVD +/- R/RW drive 
thinking that since I needed a DVD burner it would be good for everything.  
Only now am I attempting to use it for burning purposes and am finding 
problems.  Does anyone here have any experience with this drive yet?  

Using the -blank=disc option results in:
   ./cdrecord-ProDVD: OPC failed.
   ./cdrecord-ProDVD: Input/output error. blank unit: scsi sendcmd: no error

Attempting to burn material produces this error:
   ./cdrecord-ProDVD: Input/output error. send opc: scsi sendcmd: no error
   ./cdrecord-ProDVD: OPC failed.

ProDVD's -atip command line option brings back meaningful results, so I 
believe I'm talking to the drive just fine.  The media just came out of 
shrink wrap and is a brand known to work with my CRX-160E.

Any ideas?  Is this thing just too new (shouldn't MMC compliancy be enough?)
