The only other possibilities I can think of are:
1. the drive is defective
2. the media is defective/poor quality.
Is the drive new? How old is the media, is it a brand name or
otherwise? You might try just a different brand of media, but no
guarantees.

I didn't have to buy my radio from a specific company to listen
to FM, why doesn't that apply to the Internet (anymore...)?
