[ale] Is awk the right tool for this?

It's Fletch! The guy dreams in perl. He doesn't have to try to
obfuscate. It just works better that way. :)

In all the years I've posted a perl solution to a problem on ALE, I have
recieved a better/different/faster or harder-to-read-later way from
Fletch. 

If he has kids, they're gonna' be warped!!  :)
