I think you nailed it right there.  Sed, awk, and xargs can give you 
some major kung fu.  Same if you can do things in Perl or Python.  I 
have a utility in mind that I want to create someday - if I do it in 
bash, I know xargs will be in there somewhere, or I could do it in Perl 
or Python.

Actually, I feel that if I hired a Linux sysadmin, I'd like him to be 
super-effective at being able to do anything he needed to do on any 
server while sitting in his alpha-geek command chair :-).
I'd also like him to know how to get NIS and/or Kerberos going, so as to 
better trivialize account generation and maintenance.
