[ale] hard drive won't mount

you may be right, it was last year and i've slept
since then.  

my point was NOT to chunk the drive just yet.

the extent of problems seems to vary a lot with the
drive.  some users never see any trouble at all.  for
some it is a minor annoyance.  in my case it was
hogging resources.  going back to a 2.2 was a
performance increase.

yes one of these days i will be forced to move onward
and upward, but i'm in no hurry.
