[ale] openssl related software question

ALErs -
Last evening I went to openssl.org and got two tarballs:
openssl-0.9.6e.tar.gz and openssl-engine-0.9.6e.tar.gz
to replace openssl[-engine]-0.9.6c in my RH-6.2 setup. (I've always had
better luck with this approach than the openssl RPMs for reasons I
forget.)
I had two surprises:
1) Instead of unpacking to a <SRC_ROOT>/openssl-engine-0.9.6e/, the
'engine' tarball unpacked into <SRC_ROOT>/openssl-0.9.6e/ where it
presumably conflicted with the base fileset. The README.ENGINE said the
base -0.9.6e build doesn't depend on 'engine' and I don't have any HW
encryption support, so I said 'fsck it' and went with the non-engine
files. This seems to have changed from -0.9.6c. What's up?
2) I had a problem installing the manuals, shown by the message scrap
below. I just cut the docs out of the install target, but would like to
fix this. My perl is: 'version 5.005_03 built for i386-linux' from the
rpm: 'perl-5.00503-10' Should I look for a newer perl, an older 'pod2man'
or a 'Man.pm' (and where), or what?
