and, the pertinent example.  As I was typing my response, based on no
experience and limited reading, ppl who have direct experience and in-depth
reading were able to offer concrete info rather than my lame attempt.  So,
I'll shut up and let the experts answer.

I've actually had a fair amount of success in the past pair programming
with a shared desktop, headphones/mic and an internet telephone.  Of
course, that was before I ever heard of "pair programming".  Now that it
is an official meme maybe it won't work as well anymore.  :-)
