[ale] [OT] Samsung HDD

Ok, I'm puzzled here. Neither LILO nor Grub work. LILO says Error 4x04 and
Grub says Geom error. No kernel error messages when booting from CD, and
the systems installs flawlessly. Even LILO (and Grub, for that matter)
install ok.

The BIOS has two large access settings. Dos and Other. Same results. With a
Win95 bootdisk, when on Other, fdisk crashes. When on DOS, when you format
the drive, it goes ok, until it gets to Creating File Alloc Table, when it
dies with 3%.

Samsung has a utility to test their HDDs. It passes all tests. Then it has
another to "low-level format" Their HDDs. It crashes at 3rd track, with a
Borland Turbo C++ 2.0 error message.

I took it out of a system of mine yesterday, that was dual-booting, with
LILO. No problems at all.

I've tried NetBSD and FreeBSD also, both install flawlessly, neither boots.
(silent at bootstrap time.)

So, connecting the fact that LILO, Grub and DOS (as well as the BSD
bootloaders) all use the BIOS, could it be a problem not related to the
drive? Could it be a BIOS problem? If so, I'm dead. It is an Unisys Aquanta
CP, which doesn't even has a single page in Unisys web site.

Well, thanks in advance, maybe is a simple problem that is over my head.
