[ale] reference for maxtor drives bad with linux 2.4?

Does anyone have a reference to the recent problems with 2.4.x and Maxtor drives?  I've recently been given an 80 gig maxtor drive and I'd like to figure out if it is going to work or not.  I've done some searching, and I can't find any reference except a vague one here on the ALE mailing list.
