Sure LVM (1.0.1-rc2 or newer) can extend/reduce the LV while it's fs is mounted.  It's the filesystem on top of LVM that gets all bent out of shape and has to be unmounted before it can be resized (currently).

**Disclaimer** reduce you LV at your own risk!
Reducing the LV smaller than the FS on top of it will corrupt your fs, cause data loss and premature wrinkles.
