I think Ad-aware is probably the cleaner you're
thinking of:

It only runs on Windows (and really only needs
to...it's a bit more difficult to distribute spyware
under linux) and does a great job of cleaning your
system.

Although companies have to make a buck, spyware is
something I definitely disagree with.  I ran Ad-aware
on my Win box and was shocked at what popped up. 
Companies which I've been very pleased with otherwise
have resorted to this (ex. audiogalaxy.com).
