Look at the program - if you want to write programs, see how much they offer
related to sfotware development - Data Structures, Database, Software
Architecture,
etc.  If you want to set up systems, look for IT stuff - network design, etc.

While there are quite a few people without degrees working successfully in the
field,
the recent downturn makes a degree more useful - it's a lot easier to justify
hiring a degreed candidate than one without, and passing a CS program does give
some idea of ability, while the current legal climate makes it difficult to
check
on past work, which is the only way to judge undegreed candidates.
