[ale] Upgrade C++ in Mandrake 8.0

I wrote a C++ program on Mandrake 8.0 and finished it on RedHat 8.0.  The RedHat compiler was not as forgiving as Mandrake.  The good news is I finished it under RedHat.  I need to sync my Mandrake 8.0 C++ capability with the real world.  What packages should I look for to upgrade?  I don't plan to reload Mandrake 8.0 to 9.0, just give my current version some more modern files.

What do I look for?
