[ale] NIC problems

I'm having problems with my NIC, Netgear FA311. Lately when I shut
down, I see a line that says
 kernel: eth0: Autonegotiation advertising 0x5e1 partner 0x00.
Also found it in my /var/log/messages. What exactly is this and is it
something I should be worried about?
I'm also having problems with my connection. I have ADSL which should
be always on. But the drivers netgear supplied for this card won't even
compile! It's a known issue that netgear refuses to address even though
they still advertise Linux drivers on their products. Jerks. So I'm
using the natsemi.o drivers which work. But if I'm idle for even a few
seconds, my connection is dropped. I get a line like...
pppoe[4492]: Inactivity timeout... something wicked happened
in /var/log/messages. Most of the time I don't notice because my box
automatically reconnects but it is rather annoying. This is also a
known issue. Anyone else have this problem with this card and solve it?

Thanks

Jeff Rose
