What was the exact error?

I had a similar issue the first time I tried to install Gentoo - took me
three days of starting over, and again, and again, before I finally decided
maybe the guys who were telling me to try changing my RAM knew what they
were talking about. I even tried running memtest86 on it over an entire
weekend, with no errors. Lo and behold, the memory that had worked fine for
Windows 200, then Redhat, SuSE, and Mandrake installs, and 2 full days of
memtest, turned out to be the culprit. New memory, and no more problems.
