Correct me if I'm wrong, but you shouldn't need forwarding turned on to
ping the machine. Granted, you will need it eventually as the linux box
is the gateway for the win box, but it's a non-issue at this point.

I didn't have to buy my radio from a specific company to listen
to FM, why doesn't that apply to the Internet (anymore...)?
