[ale] rhn updates

Hello,

There has been a discussion about the RHN and updates.  I have had to use
it late
at night to get my free updates.

I have a couple questions:

What are the 'headers' that the updater retrieves into /var/spool/up2date ?

Since you can get the rpms easily from a mirror site anytime, would it not
make
sense to download the rpms into that directory?  Will the updater ignore
files
that are there already?
