Ah.  I think thats your problem...

I'm almost positive the defaults are set for an i686 processor...

So, you'll need to change the Processor flags in make.conf to those for a
Pentium...

Just:

nano -w /etc/make.conf

and scroll down to the Processors section.  There are three flags to change:
CHOST, CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS.  You can also set proxy information in here to
get through your firewall.
