There are no secrets. You arent going to be able to do a reasonably
impressive Quake3 game on laptop hardware, unless maybe it was the
absolute latest.

Does XFree86 support hardware acceleration for your chipset? If not, then
no way. If so, you might have a chance. Make sure you have plenty of free
memory, dont run GNOME/KDE, just X and a small window manager like twm or 
something.
