I can only give my personal experience.  I will LEAVE a website 
which is not usable on whatever browser I happen to be using.

I suspect that I'm not the only one who does this, so  
when I design websites, I try very hard to make them at least 
"polite" to everyone, even those who are using Lynx. They won't 
see the pictures, but they were expecting that.  The rest of the 
info is there for them.

The bottom line is, if your client wants to sell things, he'd better 
forget the special effects and avoid telling people to 
"go away".
