one more step:
usermod -d /home/trouble1 trouble1
/home/root is not for user 'root' as in "uid=0(root)", right ? If so,
many people will recommend against login as 'root' so casullay. if so,
you'd simply start/keep using 'good1' user.

#
#userdel trouble1
#usermod -l trouble1 good1
#passwd trouble1 (change pass for trouble1, otherwise it will carry good1's pass)
#mv /home/trouble1 /home/trouble1.broken ( in case you want to study it further)
#mv /home/good1 /home/trouble1

#yes .gnome will be created if none exists already.

##Jerry,
##
##I forced the reinstall of the gnome rpm packages. I logged on as another
##user
##and it worked for that new user.
##
##Now, should I just copy the .gnome directory from that successful user to
##the
##/home/root directory? Would that work? Or should I just delete the
##.gnome
##directory in /home/root? (Perhaps if the directory is missing, it will
##create a
##new one?)
##
##Thanks,
