[ale] mandrake 8.0 wackiness

It does sound like crappy hardware. Clue #1 Packard Bell
#2 worked better for a while after a reboot

I would suspect heat. The new scsi drives are really hot. I have never
had good luck with a box built with less than 3 fans with scsi drives.
