[ale] Memory Usage -- How much is normal?

Hi,
It seems that ever since I reinstalled moving myself to Mandrake 8.1 from 
Mandrake 8.0, everything seems significantly slower.Running things that I had 
no problems running before seems to really slow the system down bad. I'm not 
sure if it is memory usage or what it is. The output of 'free -m' shows
             total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:           123        120          2          0          3         50
-/+ buffers/cache:         66         57
Swap:          125         79         46

This is with GNOME 1.4, Opera 5.05TP1, and xmms running. Is this normal and I 
should look elsewhere for the problem? Or have the requirements really 
stepped up that much? I had almost the same versions of this stuff running 
previously.

Setup:
AMD K6-II 450MHz processor
128MB RAM
2.4.12 kernel
Mandrake 8.1
GNOME 1.4 w/Nautilus 1.0.4
