John, have you ever heard of basic stamps? They are small microprocessors
that are perfect for this kind of thing. They're found here:
http://www.parallaxinc.com/
It can decode DTMF and send a string to the serial port, among other things.
Definately worth checking out. You might want to check the applications
area to see if someone has done something like this already...

I'm trying to devise a way of being able to dial my
home computer from the office using a phone (not a
modem), have it answer, and then somehow tell it to
execute a sequence of commands (possibly based on
touch pad key presses). I've been playing around with
mgetty and vgetty but haven't gotten very far.
Has anyone attempted something like this in the past?
Is it possible?
