Try to avoid kernel rpm's. That seems to be the most difficult part of the
system to recover from an rpm install from. Download the sources, run make
xconfig, read all the helps and /usr/src/linux/Documentation/* and roll
your own.

Besides, it's the *NIX way :)

The kernel rpm is a generic, one-size-fits-all thing. 
It's great for most installs, but once your up and running, roll your own.
