[ale] Best way to run Postgresql on desktop ?.........

Good Evening,

What's the best way to run Postgresql from the desktop, as opposed to 
logging in as a postgres user at bootup ?

Incidentally, does anyone know what VERSION of Postgresql is installed 
by Debian-2.4.x by default ?
