	James,

I am assuming that your null modem cable directly connects a
COMM port on the (intel) linux box to a COMM port on the HP box. You are
starting minicom on the intel box, telling minicom to use /dev/ttySx, and
getting nothing?

Hmm, is there a modem between you and the HP box? I've
used minicom to connect to the "console" of a few ciscos via direct cable.
In such a case, unless the cabling is wrong or data/parity/baud is wrong,
it should be a simple matter of plugging the boxes together and hitting
"enter" a few times in minicom.

Check that the baud/parity settings are similar on both machines
(ie, minicom is using the same settings that your HP console is set to).
Check the obvious (The HP *really is* listening on it's COMM port for a
console); x86 linux recognizes whatever /dev/ttySxx you are using. Also,
is the HP merely sending "console logs" to the serial port, or, is a getty
listening on the serial port? In the former case, any input from your end
would (obviously) warrent no signs of life from the HP box.

					My stab at it,
