[ale] Weird X question

Hey... Check this out!

I have this 233intel with 32megs and a 4meg S3 right. Someone gave it to me
and I thought well I put slackware 8 on it ( like every other linux box I
have ) 

Anyway. I set it up and everything is fine except no matter what X will not
change from 64x480... I know it is reading the XF86Config cause if I put
garbage in there is crashes it. I have the "Modes" and the "DefaultDepth"
option set just like my other box. 

Anyone know much about X? I don't think I have ever seen such weirdness with
the configs. I thought that maybe the box was low on ram and X decided to
ignore my defaults however this is not true. I know this cause I set the
display to 8bits and the resolution to 1024x768, I should have been able to
do that no problem. 

If I pass the option "startx -- -depth 24" I can see that it is starting in
24bit color cause I see it in the log.

I'm stumped!
