Interesting...  I've never seen a distro that used compressed (.gz) modules.  Is anyone besides Mandrake 8.1 doing this?

Just a guess Michael, but I'd bet you now have an IRQ or some type of IO conflit on your SB card. (If it really is an old ISA SB.)  Thank you PnP.
