[ale] Config linux to use fixed IP with NT network

Ian -
Let me see if I can get you started.
First and foremost, you need to make sure that the DHCP daemon running under
NT is leaving a "hole" for the fixed IP address you want to use for the
Linux system. Alternatively, you can set up the DHCP daemon to work only
within a certain contiguous range within the available address space,
leaving an adjacent range from which you can manually assign addresses for
fixed-IP machines.
With a fixed-IP Linux machine, you need to make sure that you are setting
the correct gateway IP address and subnet mask. Just last week, I
discovered a situation in which the mask and gateway settings remained at
their defaults (255.255.0.0 and null, respectively) after install time, for
reasons I still don't understand. Best to always do an ifconfig to verify.
Also, nothing will work really right until all the machines can resolve each
other's names. In a mixed NT/Linux environment, this means that you need to
play with DNS, WINS, or some combination of both. If you're using DHCP,
host tables would be ineffective.
Chapter 7 of the O'Reilly USING SAMBA book discusses all this in some
detail. I think that book is online in its entirety either at O'Reilly's
site or at www.samba.org.
