Regarding http://www.frankenlinux.com.guides/tweaks.html
This is interesting. My Slack 7.1 machine had DMA turned
on by default, but not 32-bit I/O.
Here are my results with all combinations:
DMA 32-bit MB/S
----------------------------
0 0 5.0
0 1 6.5
1 0 8.7
1 1 8.5
I did this several times, with pretty
consistent results. The HD is not ATA66, but it
still seems a bit surprising that DMA and 32-bit
I/O both independently improve performance, but
together they don't do as well as DMA alone.
I wonder if this is an HD issue, a mobo/chipset
issue, or a combination of things?
(This experiment was done on a Tyan S1598 mobo
with a WD Caviar 22500 HD.)
