[ale] Installing home networking/automation

Hello again, hope you're still doing well in the oh, say, 3 seconds between
the first mail and this one...

Aside from monitors, I'm also trying to get a home network up and running,
but I need to find someone who can run the cabling... The house is
prewired, but with daisy-chained cat 3... Nasty. I'd do it myself, but I
got in a fight with Georgia Power a decade back, and trying to cut RJ45 ends
without hands is, uhh, shall we say "challenging".

If anyone knows of a network installer looking to pick up a few bucks before
(or after) Xmas, please drop me a line.

Following are the job specs, taken from a request for proposals back in July
which no-one bothered to respond to. (Is it me or has it gotten hard as
h*ll to actually get help with anything any more?) Anyway, as you can see
the scale varies, and could include some hardware sales in some
configurations.

Additionally, this will be one point of a 3 node DOCSIS/xDSL based VPN. (The
other two are in Florida) If anyone has any comments on the good, bad, or
ugly here, please let them fly.

Again, thanks in advance...
-Greg

====================================================================

Requirements:
	Determine drop components:
		2/3 x Cat 5
		1/2 x RG6
		0/1/2 x MM Fiber?

	Drop locations:	(Star topo)
4 - Inside wall of all attic-accessible rooms
1 - Inside wall of main floor office
1 - Inside wall of basement office

	Channel requirements:
		4+ voice
			1+ POTS
0+ VoIP via Mediaone cable modem
Prefer unlimited channels via VoIP if possible
		1 100baseT

	Phone system:
		4+ CO/ITSP channels
		Wireless handsets
		4-20 handsets depending on cost

There is an attic-basement chase w/drawstring for pulling more cable.
Network drops should test out to 100 megabits (FastEthernet). Existing
daisy-chain Cat3 suffers from crosstalk and performs as a HPNA carrier.
(Actually, it fails to perform, but that's a different issue)

Job includes relocating and mounting existing cablemodem & switch from
upstairs bedroom to basement utility room. (Existing hub of RG59 star-topo
runs). 486/100 will accompany switch/modem as 805.11b/HPNA/X10 router &
firewall.
