Look into ImageMagick.... It's got tons of image processing options... You
could create thumbnail images by using "convert -geometry 180x135 infile.jpg
outfile.jpg"... (changing the obvious values)...
It also supports Visual Image Directories.... You can read about those here:

Hope this helps...

Subject: [ale] Making single thumbnails from jpegs
I would like to borrow a clue, should someone have one to spare for a
day or two...
Earlier this month I marched myself off west to visit a passel of
relatives, and on the way I played tourist. Took a bundle of pictures,
which the relatives would like to see since I used my electronic
camera. Being the nice person I am, I agreed to burn a CDROM and
send the pictures out.
The rub comes with having over 300 pictures, many of which need
some explaining. Since I took notes, I can do this for myself, but for
others it makes more sense to organize everything with html. I now
would like to create single thumbnails from each jpeg file for inclusion
into pages for selection of individual pictures, as the computer to
be used for viewing has some age, and loading, shrinking, and displaying
15+ 100KB jpg files will be somewhat slow. If I can make a 10KB
(?) thumbnail, their computer can load and render the pages much quicker,
and I get even more credit for being clever 8-).
I have a copy of icontact for making a full contact sheet of filed
pictures, but I'm not getting it to script well to do what I want. Would I
be better off with a different program for this project? or do I beat
icontact and myself into submission? or is there another way?
My thanks in advance
BTW - for the curious, icontact is a wonderful tool to create contact
sheets of collections of pictures and I do recommend it for the
purpose.
