[ale] System Performance Tuning

Good morning,

Recently I have read that the Mandrake distro was different from Red Hat
because all the packages have been rebuilt and optimized for the Intel
platform. If this is true, can someone confirm the performance increase from
RH6.0. Also I am interested in compiling a few programs to have them
optimized for my system. I have figured out how to type:

./configure
make
make install

but, since most of these source files seem to not be programmed in Perl,
it's like reading Spanish. Does anyone have a quick lesson laying around
about performance compiling on the Intel and related info? Any help would be
appreciated.
