the command:

ntpq -p 

Will show you which server you're currently syncronized to, and how
far off you are from it. (you may have to specify the full path
e.g. /usr/sbin/ntpq -p or /sbin/ntpq -p)

$ /usr/sbin/ntpq -p
     remote           refid      st t when poll reach   delay   offset    disp
==============================================================================
+ytterby.gw.uiuc argus.cso.uiuc.  2 u  397 1024  377    49.15   -7.027    7.03
+131.144.4.27    198.72.72.10     3 u  351 1024  377    85.43    6.974   49.35
*198.72.72.10    130.207.244.240  2 u  267 1024  377     9.46   -5.208   13.99

The '+' means that positive contact with the server is being made
the '*' means that this is the server that's currently being
sycronized with.  If you don't see a '*' anywhere, you aren't
syncronizing yet (like right after you start xntpd)
