I haven't had any problems with Mediaone. It is ten dollars cheaper, is
probably faster (for now) than
a "dedicated" Bell South line, and I didn't agree to as stringent a set of
rules governing my use, as Bellsouth requires.
My Linux box seems to work great with it. I am on dynamic IP, but it
doesn't seem to change much, and
I have had virtually no serious service problems.
Of course, the ultra paranoid won't like sharing access with the
neighborhood, for security reasons.
I would like ADSL, with a static IP, but not through BellSouth. Any
suggestions?
Someone here mentioned Verio. I emailed them, and this is the response I
got concerning their ADSL
lines in my area. A bit pricey...
-----------------------------
Jeff,
That location qualifies for a maximum speed of 416 kbps. The Verio One
package is designed for one user, and also gives you 1email box, and 1 DNS
domain host if needed. I imagine the packages will be similar in ATLANTA in
June with price close as well.
160 kbps $123/Mo.
200 kbps $150/Mo.
416 kbps $205/Mo.
I believe installation fees will be waived as part of a promotion into
Atlanta ($500+ savings), the digital router will run about $500 one time fee
and yours to keep. That is a flat monthly fee and will see no charge from
phone company. Thank you very much.

Basically, for the lower-rates, you have ADSL or ISDN.
MediaOne might provide cable access in your area, but I wouldnt recommend
it because a) the bandwidth is shared, b) I've heard quite a few horror
stories regarding it, and c) why pay their rates when you can pay $59.95/mo
and get a dedicated 1.544mbps connection (dedicated!) through BellSouth.
