I maintain a number for systems running the current stable (2.2.9) kernel.
Some run Redhat, others Slakware.
I just went to apply Alan Cox's service patch four to fix the ICMP denial
of service problem. All of the source directories are /usr/src/linux, with
linux being linked to /usr/src/linux-2.2.9. Because of the directory
naming convention that Alan uses, I have also linux /usr/src/linux.vanilla
to /usr/src/linux-2.2.9. My procedure is to copy the patch file to the
/usr/src directory, and then patch < patch-2.2.9-ac4.

This works fine for the slakware systems. The patch is easily made and the
kernel recompiles properly.
With the Redhat systems, I continually get a message asking for the
location of the file to be patched. What is interesting is that the
directory structure between the slakware systems and the Redhat systems
(/usr/src/linux, /usr/src/linux-2.2.9, /usr/src/linux-vanilla ) is
identical. It does not work on the Redhat systems. It does work on the
Slakware systems.
Does anyone have any hints on how to make this work on the Redhat systems?
I really do not want to download the new kernel from Redhat...
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Bob
With all of that done, the patch goes on just fine for the Slakware
systems.
