Autodetected. In fact 2.0.36 autodetects now.

Yes it'll be better. 2.0.X support basically spinlocked the kernel across
all the CPUs so that whenever one CPU entered the kernel, the others could
not.  2.2 has much finer grained entry control giving much better performance
overall.
