[ale] gpm/select/RH6.0 question

Hello-

I have a RH6.0 "out of the box" installation on an AST "Bravo" with a M$
2-button, PS-2 mouse, which appears in /etc/sysconfig/mouse as:

 MOUSETYPE="imps2"
 XMOUSETYPE="IMPS/2"

and 'ps -aux |grep' gpm reports:

 gpm -t imps2

All is fine with X11R6 (Gnome/Enlightment), but when I open a VT console
the mouse cursor jumps around, buttons misfunction, and selection
generally fails as if it expected a different mouse type.

How do I configure my system so that mouse selection works on text
screens?

I don't remember what I did, if anything, to make this work on older
systems.
