I started X like I've always started it "startx". I know there was some
problem in the RH5.0 distribution wherein one had to disable gpm and also
copy the xinitrc and Xclients files in the home directory since that wasn't
done by default. I don't remember exactly, but the problem was on those lines
where startx would just sit there with no window manager. The problem I'm
now facing is a bit different. It finds the window manager alright. I copied
the xinitrc and Xclients files and edited them to just start Afterstep.
Afterstep comes up with the wharf buttons and all, however the mouse just
won't budge. All the various mouse tests and auto*probes come up with the
mouse configuration as a PS/2 mouse mounted on /dev/psaux. The mouse works
fine on the console, just the X seems to be having problems. I'm trying some
suggestions emailed to me, to no avail so far. I'll keep on it, please let me
know if you think of something else.
